FORMER ARIZONA STAR TARYNE MOWATT AND 2008 NCAA PLAYER OF THE YEAR ANGELA TINCHER TO APPEAR AT GLENDALE SOFTBALL SHOWCASE Two of College Softball’s Top All-Time Pitchers to Address Up-and-Coming Players
GLENDALE, AZ – Former University of Arizona star pitcher Taryne Mowatt and 2008 NCAA Player of the Year Angela Tincher will address the participants at the inaugural Arizona Fastpitch Showcase, to be held at Glendale’s Victory Lane Sports Park July 20-22. The event, presented by API Sports, Victory Lane Sports Park and K-4, will provide high school softball players entering grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 with an opportunity to be seen by coaches representing NCAA and junior college programs.
The event begins on Monday night, July 20, with a seminar for the participants featuring Mowatt and Tincher, as well as collegiate coaches, trainers and compliance experts. Topics to be covered include what it takes to play at the highest level, pitching mechanics, what collegiate coaches look for in players and what to expect from the recruiting process.
In addition to earning the 2008 National Player of the Year Award at Virginia Tech, Tincher was a three time All-American, three-time academic All-American, three-time ACC Pitcher of the year and two-time ACC Tournament MVP. She was nominated for an ESPY as the top female collegiate athlete of the year, was a finalist for the Honda-Broderick Cup, awarded to the top female athlete in the NCAA, and was the ACC Female Athlete of the Year. She led the nation in ERA her junior and senior years and also led the country in strikeouts and strikeouts per game as a senior in posting a 38-10 record with two saves, four no hitters and 39 double-digit strikeout performances. Her 38 wins and 679 strikeouts as a senior are both ACC and Virginia Tech records. Tincher was drafted by the Akron Racers in the first round of the 2008 draft and was named to the All-NPF Team as a rookie after leading the league with 157 strikeouts. She also is in her first year playing for LeoPalace 21 of the Japanese Professional League.
After playing for the Washington Glory of the NPF last season, Mowatt signed this year to play on the PFX Tour. She concluded her collegiate career with 1,267 strikeouts, good for second best in Arizona history, and among the top 20 in NCAA annals. At the 2007Women's College World Series she led the Wildcats to their second consecutive and eighth overall national softball title. That season she had 27 games in which she recorded double-digit strikeouts and threw three no-hitters en route to 42 victories and 522 strikeouts (both school records). As a sophomore Mowatt hit a home run (her third of the year) in Game 1 of the 2006 Women's College World Series National Championship against Northwestern after hitting .290 for the season. Mowatt was selected to the WCWS All-Tournament Team that year after elping lead the Wildcats to their seventh national title.
Every participant will get to play in at least two games per day on Tuesday and Wednesday and to participate in combine-style testing in front of college coaches. Monday’s seminar is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., with Tuesday’s activities running from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., respectively.
